AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Class 19 Member Spotlight: Gabby Butterfield

Name: Gabby Butterfield Hometown: Kalamazoo, Mich. Gabby is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 1 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to explore new places, meet new people, and try new things while bringing resources and hope to people in need. Gabby graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 2007 and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and women's studies.

Daffodil Days: Area ACS volunteers taking orders now

Every year the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days program brings hope to people with cancer, and to their friends and families across the country.  With your support we can continue helping those touched by cancer and empowering people to fight back against this disease.  Together, we are creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

 Name: Christine Canavan Hometown: Caldwell, N.J. Christine is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 1 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she is very drawn to serving others and wanted to make a difference. She believes that a term of service will be very rewarding and contribute to her personal and professional development.

Knights of Columbus aid ARC, Special Olympics with Tootsie Roll Campaign

The K of C donated to the local Special Olympics team after their Tootsie Roll fund-raiser. The Vinton Knights of Columbus recently completed the annual Persons With Intellectual Disabilities fundraiser in Vinton.  Knights were stationed outside area Fareway, Theisen’s, Dollar General and Alco stores collecting donations and handing out Tootsie Rolls.  (Group Shot) Vinton Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Joe Wehage presents a check to Tammy Zimmerman, Head Coach of Vinton Shellsburg United Special Olympics.

Vikes of the Week: Stevie Henry and AJ Kearns

Vike of the Week: Stevie Henry Vikes of the Week include: Stevie Henry (nominated by Mr. Patterson). Before Xmas break we did the tie dye unit in Chemistry. The students were instructed to take their tie dyed clothing items home with the blizzard barreling down on us it was a pretty good chance we would not be here the next day and if the clothing did not get rinsed out it would bleed all the colors together and ruin the item.

1,708 receive degrees at ISU commencement; local graduates listed

At Iowa State University's fall 2012 commencement ceremonies, 1,708 students received degrees. Iowa State awarded 1,388 undergraduate degrees, 210 master's degrees, and 110 doctor of philosophy degrees. Of the students receiving bachelor's degrees, 264 graduated "With Distinction" (cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude).

Tilford students celebrate PJ Day; pig-kissing set for next Friday

Friday was a normal day for Tilford Elementary students. They recited the Pledge of Allegiance; took some tests, and worked on reading. But they students -- along with teachers and even cooks and office staff -- did it in their pajamas. Friday was PJ Day at Tilford, a fun prize for the students to honor them for achieving one of the goals for their fund-raiser for custodian John Scriven, who is battling cancer.

He chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because he is committed to service and wanted to be part of a brand-new program. Prior to joining Bryan served a summer term as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) member at School On Wheels in Indianapolis, helping run a summer arts program for homeless youth.

  Name: Patrick Houston   Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa.   Patrick is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 4 at the Vinton Campus. He first learned about AmeriCorps NCCC from his sister who served at the Denver Campus in 2008. He chose to participate in the NCCC FEMA Corps program because of his longstanding interest in disaster response and recovery work.

  Name: Amelia Rubin   Hometown: Winston Salem, N.C.   Amelia is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 7 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps she wanted to help people who have survived a disaster.   Amelia graduated from Lincoln High School in 2008 and graduated from Forsyth Technical Community College with an associate’s of applied sciences degree in horticulture in 2012.
